“A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.” – Bob Dylan

Nic Bartolotta is an inventor, physical therapist, holistic health practitioner, speaker, and creator of Dynamic Contraction Technique (DCT), which has revolutionized how we understand flexibility and the methods used to address human performance and rehabilitation.

In 2012, the United States Patent Office granted Nic his first Utility Patent for the DCT ProFlex validating his unique therapeutic device and treatment methodology. Dynamic Contraction Technique, and the DCT ProFlex have since been adopted by elite collegiate and professional organizations alike. Trainers and therapists from teams like the Dallas Mavericks, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Houston Rockets, and the USC Trojans have all found great benefit to using Nic’s tools and techniques with their athletes.

Nic was first introduced to physical therapy in 2001 when a knee injury threatened to end his college springboard diving career. At the age of 19 an MRI confirmed that the cartilage in his left knee had worn down to the bone. The prognosis was grim, and he was told that he could anticipate a knee replacement surgery before he turned 45. As is common with many innovators in sports medicine, this injury led Nic to seek out an alternative solution to resolve his pain and return to competition. Through a 2 year mentorship with Bob Cooley (Resistance Flexibility Strength Training) he was able, not only to return to diving, but he went on to compete in the America’s Cup narrowly missing the 2004 Olympic Trials and ending his career ranked in the top 50 in the nation. What’s more impressive, however, is that since 2001 Nic has not experienced any knee pain making the original prognosis of a knee replacement surgery seem absurd. Understanding how the complete resolution of such a severe knee injury was possible has been the driving force behind all of Nic’s academic and professional endeavors.

Graduating in 2003 from UC Berkeley with a BA in Rhetoric Nic went on to continue his education by completing a 1000 hour Holistic Health and Massage program at the International Professional School for Bodywork (IPSB) in San Diego. He then went on to attend Cal State University in 2007 at Long Beach where he earned his Masters degree in Physical Therapy performing his graduate research on DCT. His research study, titled “Dynamic Contraction Technique vs. PNF: A Comparative study of Two Stretching Procedures on Increasing muscle Length of the Hamstrings and Iliopsoas” demonstrated that DCT was clinically viable as a physical therapy modality (Click here to download a PDF of the study).

While attending graduate school Nic founded Harmonix Health LLC and created a robust certification program for DCT hosting hundreds of courses for trainers and therapists all over the country. Along with the DCT ProFlex, he has invented a number of different manual therapy and self care products for which he has several more patents pending. In 2014 Nic was asked to be the keynote speaker for a fitness and wellness franchise called The Exercise Coach. His speech, Optimizing Flex-Ability (Click here to view video), led to his appointment as Director of Elite Performance for the company, and in March of 2015 Nic and CEO of The Exercise Coach, Brian Cygan, co-invented a groundbreaking and revolutionary new strength training/flexibility device called the CrossFire. With several novel utility patents pending the CrossFire will have its debut this Fall with the Detroit Pistons NBA team as well as in the prestigious Orthopedic Clinic of Dr. Walter O’brien in Los Angeles (Click here to view video).

Nic is entering into his third season working as a Flexibility Specialist/Consultant for the Dallas Mavericks. The 2015/16 NBA season will bring a wider audience to DCT with the implementation of the CrossFire as well as several pending DCT ProFlex Certifications within the league. He continues to focus on performance based product development and innovation within the field of Orthopedic Sports Medicine. In his free time Nic enjoys spending time at his home in Venice Beach with his wife, Jenna. Their favorite activities include people watching from their deck, Skateboarding along the boardwalk, and taking care of their 4 urban chickens!

“The purest ore is produced from the hottest furnace.” – Charles Caleb Colton

A lifelong athlete and college football player, Jim has been pursuing a career in the NFL as a punter since 2004. Always in a constant pursuit of greater flexibility to further his career, Jim found Nic and Dynamic Contraction Technique through a mutual friend, and after one session, he was hooked!

“I’ve done everything I could to improve my flexibility. I’ve tried Yoga, Pilates, elastic bands, holding static stretches so long it hurts, even yanking my legs open with ropes. And four years using all of these methods hasn’t produced the gains experienced over three months using Dynamic Contraction Technique.”

A graduate of Wesleyan University in Connecticut where he studied theatrical arts and architecture, Jim has long combined the idea of intention with action and thought with movement. His ability to apply knowledge and understanding from one art to another is his greatest strength. Whether he is coaching a new placekicker or acting on stage, he is always looking to use the teachings of one as lessons for the other.

Jim currently volunteers his time coaching punters, kickers and long-snappers at the University of San Diego. Using his five years of collegiate coaching experience, he aims to produce another All-Conference kicker this year, something he has never failed to do since he began coaching. Even in the off-season, you’ll see him at the school putting in long hours on the field to develop his own punting skills.

Jim’s family still resides in Connecticut. He has four sisters, all of whom are stellar basketball players, two having received full scholarships to Quinnipiac University. If not on the football field, you’ll find Jim serving at church, writing scripts, practicing yoga or training with some of San Diego’s other superb fitness professionals.

A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind.”- Morihei Ueshiba

Passionate about health and healing but seeing the limitations of Western medicine through the lens of his own sports injuries, Jared discovered Traditional Chinese Medicine early in life from his Kung Fu teacher and began his formal studies of TCM in 2003.  He has completed internships at the UCSD RIMAC center treating NCAA athletes with sports related orthopedic injuries. After 5 years of formal study Jared earned his M.S.T.A.O.M degree from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. He is a certified Sports Medicine Acupuncturist and has had the opportunity to work directly with NCAA, Olympic, NFL, and pro surfing athletes in both injury rehabilitation and prevention.  Jared is a California Acupuncture Board authorized continuing education provider and teaches the application of martial movement science to clinical medicine.

Jared is both an experienced clinical physician treating pain and orthopedic disorders but also aides in personal development through coaching and instruction in mindfulness and breath practice.  The philosophy that education and personal empowerment through modern and ancient systems of medical and spiritual knowledge is at the core of his work.   Combining the therapeutic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine, natural and martial movement principles, and DCT yields results that are transformative for mind and body.

DCT has become an integral part of Jared’s practice as it calls on the innate wisdom of the body and the necessity of personal responsibility for our healing (and evolutionary) process.   How we are in our bodies reflects how we are in the world.   DCT brings movement, mindfulness, and breath into every session. When we are fully present in our body, our mind is present.  This is where the true work begins.

Kim was active and athletic through school, but suffered with migraines and physical issues, which we’re later diagnosed as fibromyalgia. Kim became sedentary due to severe low back pain that resulted in surgery for a herniated disc in her late 20’s. After a long rehab, Kim started a 4 year training stint in Kung Fu and Muay Thai, which lead to an opportunity to train in Thailand. “I was in pain if I trained, and I was in pain if I didn’t, so I thought I might as well move.” Kim was then introduced to kettlebell training. “An opinion should be the result of thought, not the substitution of it.” Jef Mallett

At the age of 9, Anthony was introduced to eastern medicine by his first martial arts instructor. Unaware at the time, it was the combination of fighting and healing arts that would become a life long journey shaping all aspects of his life, and that journey continues to this day. Anthony’s formal training as a therapist began in 1992 when he attended the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine going on to become a Holistic Health Practitioner from the School of Healing Arts. Since then, Anthony has built two successful private practices in both Thousand Oaks and San Diego California. While in Thousand Oaks, he spent 4 years working in a physical therapy clinic where he was trained extensively in manual therapy and orthopedic rehabilitation. Since returning to San Diego in 2002, Anthony has been teaching massage & bodywork classes as well as anatomy and kinesiology at local massage schools throughout San Diego County. In addition to teaching bodywork, he has taught tai chi & chi kung with emphasis on health and martial art application. Anthony was introduced to DCT by Jim Rooney, whom he saw stretching a young athlete in a park one afternoon. Jim took the time to answer Anthony’s questions, and after a 15 minute DCT session of the legs, he knew that he had experienced something very profound. The freedom of movement felt in his legs combined with the feeling of muscle activation (like that of a great leg workout) was something he never felt before in such a short period of time. Shortly thereafter, Anthony enrolled in the DCT certification program and has been incorporating DCT in his practice with his clientele. The clients’ feedback has been nothing but positive and the results have been amazing. Anthony’s work is supported by an active lifestyle as an endurance athlete. He has completed 9 marathons and countless triathlons including 3 Ironman distance races to date. His greatest joy is spending time with his wife and daughter.

David is a Dynamic Contraction Technique practitioner specialising in pelvic pain. David suffered from pelvic pain from the age of nineteen to thirty four. During those 14 years, he tried a variety of treatments such as pelvic floor physical therapy in both the UK and USA and went on to have pudendal nerve entrapment surgery not once but three times. Nothing gave any lasting improvement. He eventually recovered through a movement program called Restorative Exercise. He went on to train in the programme and became a Restorative Exercise Specialist and worked with clients who suffered from pelvic pain or dysfunction.
David believes that the majority of pelvic pain is caused by muscular tension. Whilst working with pelvic pain clients there was one question which David began to research – What is the most efficient way of reducing muscle tension? He eventually found his answer in Dynamic Contraction Technique. As soon as David found DCT he knew he had to train in it.
David has been working in partnership with physical therapist Nic Bartolotta to create a DCT program for male pelvic floor dysfunction.
David and Nic have released the video download Dynamic Contraction Technique for male pelvic floor dysfunction, a comprehensive 6-week exercise programme available through the National Resistance Stretching Association Website.
David’s company is called Freedom from Pelvic Pain and he is based in Panama City, Panama. He works with clients both in person and online.

I am 23 years old, currently living in west Los Angeles, but formerly and proudly from the east coast. I have always had a deep interest and fascination with the human body and all the different facets of human performance, especially our bodies innate ability to recover from what many western medical approaches would deem improbable if not impossible to recover from. I always had a very natural kinesthetic awareness and athleticism even though I did not officially participate in collegiate or professional sports. However, I did find myself drawn and committed to Power Lifting and Martial Arts. At the time, I didn’t realize that my true passion was for the pursuit of optimal health and well being. Relatively recently I discovered that to better myself, and be the best version of myself, is what I am truly inspired by in my life. I have also always had a genuine interest in learning about people, how they work, and about how their life experiences have led to very specific tension patterns that they carry in their bodies. Literally and metaphorically I believe that people are really an accumulation of all the traumas of their lives. I feel compelled to help them and myself to better understand those traumas in order to communicate more clearly and to feel better in their/our bodies and our lives.

During this process I was fortunate to be introduced to resistance stretching and the work of Physical Therapist Nic Bartolotta. Nic helped me resolve some significant physical pain in my body that also led to some emotional breakthroughs in my interpersonal relationships with the people in my life. Resolving these injuries and reconciling these relationships is what led me to understand that through practice and discipline I could learn to help other people discover a more effective and less arduous path to personal development. I have since enrolled in a personal training certification course and intend to continue my education in the healing arts whether through alternative methodologies or through more traditional scholastic endeavours. I have had the good fortune of apprenticing with Nic Bartolotta directly for the past 7 months, working for both Dynamic Contraction Technique LLC and Range of Motion Products LLC furthering my business education in the rapidly growing field of alternative health and wellness. Since I started my apprenticeship I have achieved a Level 1 certification in DCT, and am working diligently towards becoming a Master Level DCT Instructor one day.

During my free time I enjoy going to Griffith park to hike and be outdoors as well as attending local yoga and fitness classes around LA. I am an avid researcher and love dialoguing about almost anything controversial. Feel free to email me if you would like to talk or get together for some partner assisted stretching as I am always looking for other inspired people here in LA! Thanks for taking the time to get to know me, and I hope you are having a great day! Cheers! -Skott

“Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” ~ Buddah

One of the bravest decisions I’ve made was leaving my job in corporate America of over 12 years. I had no idea it was the start of a new chapter in my life. In 2007, I left a well paying job and position as an administrative supervisor. My health was suffering and I was emotionally drained. I’m thankful for that now because it pushed me to take a huge leap of faith and simply leave. I took a position, still in administration but in a completely different field. My pay and benefits were half of what I had at the position I left but I couldn’t have been happier! It was at there that I found some of my best friends and was introduced to Anthony Robbins life coaching. In July 2008, I would start working for the Anthony Robbins Companies! It was there that a new chapter and my health journey began. A great friend and then coworker planted a seed that would change my life! He said that I could heal myself with food and exercise! Being identified as “the sick one” my entire life I couldn’t see how that could be possible and stopped to wonder why the medical professionals I grew up with and eventually worked for never mentioned such a thing. He also gave me my first health book, “Becoming Vegetarian” by Melina Davis. By December 2008, my doctor released me from medications I had taken for most of my life and a few more added the previous ten years.

The next few years were spent reading and learning on how to heal myself with food, learning to meditate and finding a gym I can call my second home. In 2011 I was certified as a Zumba instructor and had discovered a form of resistance stretching called DCT (Dynamic Contraction Technique) at The Wave House Athletic Club in Mission Beach. By early 2012 was certified by the founder of DCT, Nic Bartolotta, and began instructing DCT classes at The Wave House. Continuing my passion for self healing, I was certified as a Health Coach in 2013 by the Institute for Integrative Nutrition based in New York City. In 2014, I was certified as a Yoga Teacher by Happy U Namaste Yoga Center in Ocean Beach and Yoga Alliance. It was at Happy U where my spiritual practices took flight! I still attend their classes and workshops to continue my personal and professional growth. In January 2015, I took a second Yoga certification with The Prison Yoga Project, instructed by James Fox (founder), to teach Yoga and mindfulness practices in prisons and rehab facilities. At the end of February, I began teaching a Free Hatha Yoga at the Linda Vista Recreation Center, the neighborhood I grew up in.
